Untouched nature, a paradise of thermal baths with geysers, bubbling mud pots, an active volcano and a variety of adventure – this is what you will find in the national park ≫Rincón de la Vieja≪!
The translation of the name is “old lady`s nook”. The indigenous people of the Guatuso tribe named the volcano thus. They say that this story is behind the name: a father has thrown his daughter’s truelove into the mouth of the volcano. Since that time, she is living there as a recluse and old witch giving smoke signals.

Ricón de la Vieja

The approx. 141 km² large national park and with an elevations range between 600 and 1.900 m is located in the Guanacaste Province and just around 2 hours’ drive away from Tamarindo. This national park is great for day tours and a must-visit destination when you are in the Guanacaste Province. ≫Rincón de la Vieja≪ contains the active volcano of the same name “Rincón de la Vieja”, 32 rivers and streams and a fascinating ecosystem. Thanks to the incredible variety of flora and fauna you can watch kinkajous, pumas, a variety of monkeys, sloths, tapirs and jaguars.
