At over 34,000 acres, Rincón de la Vieja has room for two volcanoes, 32 rivers and streams, and an incredible variety of flora and fauna. It’s no surprise then that in a day, you can go horse riding, zip-lining, rapid tubing and take a mud bath in hot springs. The Gauchipelin Adventure Tour has all this covered so we went along to try it out…
The two hour journey from Tamarindo was the perfect opportunity to get to know our fellow adventurers, especially over our first wel needed coffee stop. Anticipation built in the car as the volcano came in to view and once we arrived, it was straight to business! For anyone afraid of heights, you’ll be instantly put at ease as the zip-lining team here have the air of years of expertise and professionalism, strapping us all into our harnesses within minutes before sending us flying through the jungle, over rivers and into caverns.
With a heart still racing, it was time to meet the cowboys and get saddled up for a horse ride through the forest. The horses had a variety of personalities, some feistier than others but all very well behaved and brilliant guides.
Next it’s on to the river rapids of the Rio Negro. 5 km of cool water amongst beautiful scenery were certainly a highlight for us. Whilst quick and bumpy in parts, sort of similar to bumper cars or a watery rollercoaster, there were tranquil moments where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
After a filling lunch, we were ready to relax with a mud bath at the hot springs, the final stop. Start by dipping into pool number 1 where the water is naturally heated from the volcano to 42 degrees. This opens up the pores getting the skin ready for the rejuvenating mud. We grabbed a brush and slathered ourselves from head to toe in the mud but you might need a hand to get to those hard to reach places! Once the mud had dried, and we resembled two statues, we headed to the river to wash it away and reveal beautiful shining skin beneath!
It was an idyllic way to end the day before heading back to the bus and a well deserved nap on the way home.
