Snorkeling at the Pacific Coast of Guanacaste

Edited: May 2021

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

The Province of Guanacaste located in the Northwest of Costa Rica at the Pacific coast offers a lot. You can find some of the most beautiful beaches of the country, national parks, volcanoes, and amazing flora & fauna.

It is easy to fly in thanks to the international airport of Liberia. But not only the mainland is great, did you know that besides the famous water sports surfing you can also discover the sea from under the water, and you know what… the underwater world of the Pacific Ocean is beyond description.

Diving and snorkeling is a perfect way to explore the marine life of the Pacific Ocean since the Catalina archipelago is made up of 20 small islands and is surrounded by indigo waters. This area offers a spectacular array of marine life and is a paradise for diving and snorkeling.

Between December and May, you find especially many Devil Manta Rays and other species of rays. Besides Devil Manta Rays, you might be lucky enough to also see some tropical fish as the lemon-colored barber fish, or the spiny scorpionfish.

Sometimes you can spot Humpback whales, Pilot whales, Orca whales, Spinner dolphins, Whale sharks, and Tiger sharks, and you can also come face-to-face with sea turtles and white-tip reef sharks!

The best time for whale watching is between September and March!
